William Hill Scaling Back Retail Betting Shops in Ireland

William Hill Scaling Back Retail Betting Shops in Ireland: "One of the most successful gambling operators William Hill operates worldwide, employing approximately 16,600 people with main offices in the United Kingdom republic of Ireland and more recently Gibraltar. The ringing in of the New Year has brought a tough decision to the table for the company. It is to begin a two month research process to determine which twenty stores in Ireland will get the axe. Twenty does’t seem like a lot of store front betting shops when considering the firm owns 2300 licensed betting offices in the U.K.and processes more than one million betting slips on an average day.
The cities of Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Tralee and Wexford in Ireland are the areas being scrutinized by the firm. A possible 85 employees are potentially affected by the proposed closures though the company plans to relocate as many of those people as possible.
The company has mitigated some of its losses with their internet division including online sportsbook operations, online casino games, 'skill games', online bingo and poker.

The mid December announcement of the potential closures came following a slow year for the company in both its retail and online divisions. It was reported the recent closing of 14 retail wagering shops in Ireland in 2009 cost William Hill as much as €2.8m."
